Story. The smooth-haired retriever was developed in the 1800s and is believed to be a mix of the Newfoundland, Irish Setter, Labrador, Water Spaniel, and possibly the Collie. They have excellent swimming ability and have often been used by fishermen and hunters in swampy areas. They were popular until the beginning of World War I when their numbers decreased and sadly they have never fully recovered, it is believed that this is mainly because people chose Labradors or Golden Retrievers as they are cheaper and easy to find. They were recognized by the AKC in 1950.

Temperament. The smooth-haired retriever is a sweet and loving dog. They are outgoing and devoted to their family. They love to please their owners, but it can be difficult to train them as they get bored easily.
