I was recently talking to a friend of mine on a popular social networking service and she confided in me that she and her husband were the victims of a home invasion sometime last year. I was in shock when he told me the story; about three men who broke into her house in the middle of the night, bound and gagged her and her husband, and threatened to kill any of the children if they woke up or made a sound. The men stole jewelry and anything valuable they could find, but luckily none of the children woke up and neither my friend nor my husband were physically harmed in the ordeal. Unfortunately, the psychological toll of the attack has stressed and damaged their marriage, and they are struggling to keep things together.

He went on to tell me that burglary is a fairly common problem where he lives, and that the police have not been able to do much about it. She said that many people are taking matters into their own hands and that no more than a few of the perpetrators have been injured or killed in the process. I do not have any problem with that; If someone breaks into a home and threatens the safety of a family, they deserve any harm that comes their way, but in the process, some good people have also been hurt.

Guard dogs have become the most useful deterrent, and households that have invested in guard dogs are often left alone. Not only do they act as early warning systems in case someone tries to break in, they are not afraid to attack and take down assailants, leaving the people they seek to victimize safe and sound until the police arrive.
