Are you confused and frustrated by not knowing which one to buy? A cheap desktop PC or a great value laptop? Well let me offer you my thoughts on the differences between a laptop and a desktop PC.
My goal is to make it easy for you to make the right decision and buy a PC you’re proud of.
There are many different factors that need to be considered regarding your purchase.
Let’s take a closer look at this:
portability – It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that buying a laptop will give you greater mobility. The laptop is very portable. Perhaps a better question to ask is… where do you plan to use this computer? Is it going to be home based or will I need to take it away from home? Would it be an advantage to be able to take it away from home? Personally I always choose a laptop. Why? Because it gives me more flexibility in the work environment and it’s nice to work in the garden in the summer! So for portability, laptop is preferable.
Perhaps it is not merged where your computer will be located. If that’s the case and you’re happy sitting at the same desk in the same room, the desktop is the option for you.
hardware capacity – There used to be a huge difference in hardware capabilities between a desktop and a laptop. A few years ago, if you wanted a powerful PC, you never considered a laptop. Technology these days is getting more powerful and smaller, so there really isn’t much of a difference. The only difference is the size of the hard drive. For me, this doesn’t really sell a desktop PC, as laptops typically have more than enough disk space to meet my needs.
Desktop PCs are ideal for heavy processing activities. If you’re passionate about music, videos, photography, or gaming, you might want to take advantage of your desktop PC’s increased storage capacity.
The other great thing about desktop computers is that you have a lot of room to upgrade components.
You can add an external storage drive to a laptop, but it compromises its portability.
processing capabilities – If you’re a hardcore gamer, then a desktop is the only real answer. Many games put a huge strain on a PC’s processing capabilities. With a desktop, you can always upgrade your graphics card, something you can’t do with a laptop.
So if you can’t live without your games and want to be able to play them effortlessly for the next couple of years, I’d suggest a desktop PC with a supporting graphics card installed. As companies seek to push software to its limits, they are becoming more demanding to have the hardware that supports it. Technology gets smaller and even more powerful.
cost – Laptop PCs generally cost more than desktop PCs with equivalent specifications. Laptops come with other external peripherals, such as a mouse and keyboard built into the monitor.
OK let’s summarize:
Laptops are great for portability and travel. So if portability is important, you really have no choice but to go for a laptop.
If you don’t mind working on your PC in one place, ask yourself if you’re likely to play games. If you’re likely to play games, then a desktop PC is the option for you.
