Everyone knows that exercise can help speed up your metabolism and help you burn fat. But did you know that nutrition is actually more important than exercise when it comes to staying slim? So if you cut back on exercise, you can still stay slim as long as you eat right? (That’s where the best protein drinks come in!)

A recent study conducted by Loyola University, Ibadan University, Howard University, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the University of Wisconsin, and published in the September 2008 issue of the journal Obesity, showed some very interesting results when it comes to exercise versus nutrition.

The study took a group of obese African American women from the Chicago metropolitan area (average weight: 184 pounds) and compared them to lean women in rural Nigeria (average weight: 127 pounds). Lean Nigerians were expected to be much more physically active and burn more calories than obese Americans, but the researchers found that both groups of women, lean and obese, had the same activity / energy expenditure levels! However, their diets were dramatically different.

Chicago women ate 40-45% more fat and lots of processed foods. Nigerian women, on the other hand, ate a lot of raw fiber and carbohydrates and skipped the fat and animal protein, or just ate small portions of them.

So what can you do to eat right and stay slim? Follow this 3-point plan for high-protein shakes!

# 1. Eat the right proportion of food at every meal.

What is the correct proportion? A fist of lean protein, a fist of raw carbs, and a thumb of healthy fats. Your body needs carbohydrates to:

provide glucose to fuel your body and brain – glucose = fuel
provide fiber to curb hunger and stabilize blood sugar
Burn Body Fat – If you don’t get a constant supply of glucose, your body thinks it is in emergency “starvation” mode and stores everything as fat rather than using it for energy. You need protein and fat to convert carbohydrates to glucose and create that constant supply.

# 2. Eliminate processed carbohydrates and other processed foods.

They do not provide any nutritional value. And when you eat processed foods, your body maintains excess water weight. It also stores fat because it is in emergency “starvation” mode because it is not getting any food.

# 3. Have a protein-rich shake for breakfast and plan ahead with your ingredients on hand.
