Recently, Team National (or National Companies, also known as “Big N”) has emerged as a very popular home business opportunity. As the idea of running a successful home business has grown in popularity, Team National has established itself as a very popular (and somewhat controversial) leader in the field of network marketing.

There are also some very real concerns about starting or participating in a Team National business. I’m about to go over and give an unbiased review of the pros and cons of building a business and see if we can find out if Team National is a great opportunity … or a great scam.

National Team – The Good

National Companies is a company developed and chaired by Dick Loehr. In essence, Team National offers savings benefit packages that allow customers to access discounts on furniture, jewelry, travel, insurance, communications and more. Located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Team National offers people the opportunity to save money and also to recruit others to build a business that helps people save money.

The best thing about Team National is the compensation plan. With its binary matrix, it allows distributors the potential to earn a hefty commission on every benefit package sold. It can pay off a lot, and motivated dealers definitely have the potential to make decent money.

National Team – The Bad

The first big blow against the National Team is the cost of the packages. For a 2 year membership, it costs more than $ 899.00. For a lifetime membership, the package costs $ 2,199.00. If you buy a lot of jewelry and insurance, then it could be a good deal. However, most people who join a business opportunity are not looking to spend that amount of money just to get into the business, especially without a guarantee of profit.

Another concern is the true savings offered in the benefits package. In an interview with a National Team representative, I was told that the package offered some savings, but found that you could always find a better deal just by comparing prices. So if you don’t like to shop and compare, then the benefits package is probably a great investment. But if you’re really looking to get the best bang for your buck, there may be questions about how much you can actually save.

National Team – The Ugly

The truly painful thing about starting or growing a Team National business is your marketing plan. Like many network marketing companies, Team National advocates that you pursue your “warm market,” friends and family. They teach their distributors to use a “baseball” marketing plan that is as follows:

  • 1st Base – Call a friend or family member and send them on the 10 minute “Sizzle Call” where they can hear a lot of hype about how to make millions of dollars promoting the benefits package.
  • Second base: see if your poor prospect is still interested. If so, turn them into a phone conversation with your upline, where your potential customer can hear another testimonial about how they can get rich.
  • Third Base: If your prospect is still getting their phone calls, you can schedule a home visit, where they can come to their home, show them a DVD presentation, and make another three-way call to their upline for more “validation.”
  • Home Base – Closing time! This is where the deal closes.

Growing a Team National business can be a great opportunity. They have a decent product (not great, but decent), but there are many companies that have great products, and many people who market good products never make a penny. There are also many terrible products that generate millions of dollars in revenue (does anyone remember the pet stone?). The difference is the marketer and their ability to target their market effectively.

In closing, I would say that starting and building a Team National business is lucrative if someone knows how to effectively use the telephone, the Internet, and other effective marketing tools. It is not a scam, but like any business, success will be determined by the skill set of the marketer. Team National is definitely not a lottery ticket or stock option, which means you don’t just buy and wait for a payment.

If someone doesn’t have the first clue on how to market effectively, I suggest they learn how to be an effective marketer or just use the benefits package to save a few bucks.
