Chinese who believe in FengShui are extremely superstitious about the numbers they choose as their phone number, house number, car number, and the like. The categorization of some numbers as lucky and others as unlucky depends on the way they sound when pronounced. For example, in Western numbers ‘eleven’ sounds like ‘heaven’ or the number ‘eight’ sounds like ‘weight’ or the number ‘one’ sounds like ‘son’.

Numbers considered failed by the Chinese:

The number 4 (pronounced Sei) is known to be a bad number because it sounds like the word “death” in Cantonese. The number 13 is unlucky because it adds up to 4. Apart from this, the number 24 and 104 are also unlucky for the same reason.

Figures considered lucky

Numbers like 108, 168, 99, 88, 84, 80, 68, 54, 48, 38, 28, 18, 8 are all good numbers. The main reason why 8 is lucky is because if you pronounce the word (patt) it sounds like “faat” which denotes “prosperity and abundance”.

Consequences of some figures and combinations of luck:

  • 289: Long Term Prosperity
  • 5: myself
  • 518: I will bloom
  • 5189: I will bloom for a long time
  • 516289: I will walk a long, smooth and prosperous path
  • 5918: I will soon prosper
  • 6: smooth and easy
  • 7: together
  • 8: sudden prosperity or fortune

The cure

If you have a home or business with 4 or 13, simply draw a circle around that number. The circle is tremendously powerful and captures the dire effects of the negative number. There are two ways to do this, one is to go to your local hardware store and find a ceramic door number that can be personalized with a circle. However, if you can’t afford to put too much money away, then a simpler method is to simply go out and circle the number. Also note that if you live or work in a place that has an unlucky number but is outside of China, consider how that number sounds in the native language of that particular country.

How seriously should these figures be taken? If you are still looking for a house, office, or car number, make sure you adhere to the rules set forth by feng shui. However, if you’ve already bought one with the number 4 or 13 on it, don’t worry too much, just use the cure provided above or consider changing the number to a name like “rose cottage”, “your company name”, etc.
