Creating talismans is a sacred work. However, not all talismans are meant to last a lifetime. After they have served their purpose, they must be buried. To finish your work on a talisman, it must be deconsecrated. (You can read more about the consecration of sacred tools in my articles: What is a Talisman; How to consecrate a deck of tarot or oracle, how to consecrate a new space in the home.)

Dedicating a talisman is a simple process. It’s about disrupting the energy patterns you’ve created in this object and then dispersing them out into the Universe. There are many banishing formulas and rituals and most will do, but be sure to choose one that is appropriate for each talisman.

Here’s a simple way to desecrate a talisman. All you need is the talisman, an altar, or another sacred surface on which to place the talisman.

  1. Remove the talisman from its cover. If you can achieve this without touching it, even better. This statement can be a bit confusing, so here’s an example of what I mean. If you have placed a stone, a prayer, or an affirmation, that sort of thing, in a bag, jar, or doll, etc., remove it.
  2. Place it in the center of your altar.
  3. Point your right index and middle fingers together like a sword point.
  4. Point those two fingers towards the center of your talisman and say Talisman of my creation, your work is done. I deconsecrate you and give you back your energy where it came from.
  5. Trace a banishing pentagram on the talisman OR trace a counterclockwise spiral on the talisman.
  6. In front of your talisman, visualize cutting all the energy cords between you, the reason you made the talisman, and the talisman itself.
  7. Touch your forehead with your right hand.
  8. Touch your solar plexus with your right hand.
  9. Touch your warmth with your right hand.
  10. Touch your right shoulder and then your left shoulder with your right hand.
  11. Bring your palms together in front of your heart.
  12. Condition: As I wish, it is so.
  13. Brush your hands down the front of your body and out to the sides removing any residual energy.

Once you have deconsecrated the talisman, you must dispose of it in a way that harmonizes with its associated items or correspondences. For example: if you are deconsecrating a prosperity talisman, it must be destroyed and buried in the ground. If you have created a talisman associated with the element of fire, you should burn it and spread the ashes on the ground. If you’ve created a talisman because you want to go on a big cruise, deconsecrate it and drop it by throwing it into moving water. Going back to the sea is best, but a river will work as they flow into the sea, but don’t use a natural pond or lake. If you have created a communication talisman or one that works with the element of air, smash it into pieces and release them into the air from a high place where the currents will carry them away.

Never store a talisman after you have finished using it. It is always better to create a new talisman when returning to a need or desire, than to dust off an old one that is still enshrined in old desires. Using a new car talisman you created in 2003 will still have 2003 energy, not 2011 new car energy.

Talismans are sacred objects and tools. Treat them with the care and respect that holiness deserves.
