If you’ve been struggling to figure out how to get rid of your pet’s eye stain or tear stain discharge, I can totally relate to what you’re going through. We have several Maltese dogs in our family and sadly some of them had serious Maltese eye spotting problems.

At first we didn’t know what to do. Stains ran down her face from the inner corner of her eyes to each side of her nose and it was unsightly and gross looking compared to the rest of her luxurious white gown.

We consulted with our vet and discovered that the Maltese breed has a predisposition to eye spot problems just like other breeds such as: Maltipoos, Maltese, Bichon Frise, Brussels Griffon, Dachshund, Corgi, Cairn Terrier, King Charles Cavalier Spaniel , Lhasa Apso, Miniature Schnauzer, Cocker Spaniel, Papillion, Pekingese, French Bulldog, American Bulldog, Cocker Spaniel, Corgi, Lion Dog, English Toy Spaniel, Golden Retriever, Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Saint Bernard, Westie, Shih Tzu, American Eskimo , Akita, Sharpei, Chinese Crested, Japanese Chin, Havanese or Silky Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Shih Tzu.

Even cat breeds can have eye spot discharge problems, for example: Persians, Himalayans, Exotic Shorthairs, Devon Rex and Scottish.

After consulting with our vet, we learned that our Maltese were in good health (thank goodness). The deep reddish-brown stains under their eyes were from normal dog tears running down Maltese faces.

We learned that it was common for our Maltese to have tear stains because the tear ducts and bone structure are different than other breeds and that in most cases the cause of hair and skin color change occurs when normal bacteria in hair and skin reacts with clear tears. Even though the tear stains were not a health risk, we still wanted them to go away so our Maltese could have a beautiful white face to match her beautiful white coat.

We tried so many different home remedies to help the blemishes and watery eyes go away. We finally found a product that worked like a charm and all we had to do was add a simple solution to our dog’s food and after a short while the ugly stains were gone forever.
