Do you want to teach a dog to come? It’s not as difficult as you think. Here are two dog training methods that work.

1. The really easy way to train a dog to come when called

Wait until your puppy naturally approaches you. When the dog approaches you (for a massage, a game, a treat, or whatever), say firmly, “Come,” as the dog approaches.

Speak loud enough for your dog to hear, but don’t yell. Don’t combine “Come” with a bunch of other words. So don’t say, “Come here, cutie.” An important tip for dog obedience training is to use single words when possible. Dogs respond best to single words, not combinations of words.

When the dog approaches you, say, “Okay, come on.” Say it in an excited tone of voice and give the dog effusive praise. Give the dog a treat.

See how easy this is? You can start training without doing anything other than continuing with your normal routine. Your puppy can play and have fun, and you have your free time. How good is that?

This method says very well. I used it to train my springer spaniel, Ducky, to run, and she runs at me like a shot when I call her. She also expects a treat every time she calls her, so she walks around with a pocket full of kibble, but I don’t care. It pays to have an obedient dog.

2. The almost equally easy way to get your dog to come

If you want to work on “Come” and not wait until your dog comes to you, go straight to the reward system.

The rewards can be food rewards or toy rewards. I have found that food works best, but some dogs love their toys so much that toys can work too.

For the food method, get a treat your pup likes or a small bite of a special (but healthy) food like baked chicken. Call your dog to you. Your dog will probably smell the food and come. When he does, say “Come” when he approaches, then reward him with an effusive compliment, the words “Well done,” and the treat.

If your dog loves a particular toy or toys, call your dog by enticing him with a toy. When your puppy approaches, say “Come.” Then give the dog the toy as a compliment for “Welcome.”

With any of these methods, make sure you never make this obedience training mistake: never call your dog and then do something you don’t like. Don’t use the word “Come” to get the dog to come to you and then do something like yell, lock the dog up, give him medicine, or trim his nails.

Always go to your puppy when you need to do something that your dog does not like. You want your canine to associate positive things with coming to you.

Watch? Learning how to teach a dog to cum is not as difficult as you thought, right? These two dog training methods are fun and easy to fit into your daily routine.
