Popular puppy names can be silly. They can be serious. They can be long, short, cute or dignified. How do you know which of the thousands of names you could choose from is the right one for your puppy? Choosing the best of cute puppy names is easy when you follow these three steps.

1. First, you need to let your pup “tell” you what name is right for him.

No, she’s not going to open her pretty little mouth and say her new name. (If she does, call the media and accountant her because she’s about to be famous and rich). But her pup can tell you what name suits her.

How? Just being herself.

Great puppy names start with behavior. You let your puppy’s personality choose his name.

For example, my last dog, Muggins, a Springer Spaniel, was very fond of sneaking up on things and pouncing on them. She “assaulted” her brothers and sisters repeatedly in the pen before we took her home.

Once we were home, he continued to “assault” us. My husband at the time wanted to call her Mugger because of all these assaults. And we think of Mugs because she just had the cutest little cup (face). But I remembered Cribbage’s word “raiders,” and when I looked it up and saw it meant tricked-out or dumb, I knew it fit because it was so easy to trick her when she was a pup.

The way to play the personality name game is to observe your new creature for a couple of days. Just watch.

2. After you have watched your puppy for a while, write down each word that comes to mind as you watch. Sometimes adjectives like sleepy, lazy or cheerful come to mind. Sometimes you will see character traits that are nouns like spirit, patience, or courage. Sometimes you will think of a person your puppy reminds you of or a character in a book.

Whatever you think, write it down. Trust me when I say that if you do this, you’ll have a list within a couple of days that has at least two or three dozen names. Chances are one of these names will be the perfect name for your new puppy.

3. As you make your list, get input from others as well. Your new furry will probably have many visitors. Let your friends and family suggest a name. They may see qualities in your new dog that you don’t. Those qualities will suggest a name that could be perfect.

By following these three steps, you can let your puppy’s personality and actions lead the way, and you won’t have to worry about popular puppy names. The best of cute puppy names will be revealed to you as you have fun with your new puppy.
